Description

This is an extremely rare china demitasse set of the Allegheny Pattern which was used as a tea service on the Pennsy’s Blue Ribbon trains in 1915-1925.
It is very delicate with lots of gold leafing and beautifully detailed assorted flowers on fine porcelain.
It has tiny multi-colored, chintz-like flowers and burnished Florentine gold that was brushed on, creating mystery with small building blocks that make it appear that there is another plate underneath.
These were made in Austria by the SCHWARZBURG Company and obtained for the railway through American distributors including Straus, Wright Tyndale & Van Roden and others in the late 1910s.
The saucer is 4  7/16′ in diameter.
The cup is 2  3/16 inches tall and 2  1/8 inches wide. You will also notice the hand drawn numbers on the bottom of the cups and 1 saucer.
Because it is such fragile china, ALLEGHENY is thought to have been ordered for business car use and may have been reserved for afternoon teas.
It was not designed to withstand standard passenger dining service.
I have endeavored to take many pictures of the set both back and front views.
As I positioned the cup and saucer I noticed that the saucer has 6 groupings of flowers all different.
These cups and saucers appear to have a number 7 & 38 in script on the backs. One cup and saucer does not have any number.
The cup has five groupings of flowers all different.
Although they were made to go together, they complement each other rather than match perfectly.
I included 2 pictures of the Allegheny Pattern being used on the Broadway Limited circa 1950.
The demitasse set is considered to be the most desired because it is the rarest.
All demitasse cups and saucers are somewhat different yet complement each other.
The flowers are positioned in different places.
It is something one may not notice unless one has more than one set.
The ridges built into the china causes one to think that the flowers are clipped in places.
But it is accepted/expected since the plates and cups have ridges because the cup and plate shape were molded with low swirl raised ridges.
When they were stacked the ridges rubbed each other.  Hence the white lines.
This set shows very little in fact no obvious rubbing of the flowers.  Please inspect the pictures carefully.
I will package it securely in a large priority mail box.
If you would like to insure the shipping, please pay the cost of the insurance to ship.
I will mail this for free within the contiguous united states…
I have another set of 2 demitasse cups and saucers that will coordinate with this set.
I show it in the last picture.
